Whitby Jet Necklace
Whitby Jet comes from the fossilized remains of the ‘monkey puzzle’ tree from the Jurassic period (135 million years ago) and is only found along a 7.5 mile stretch of the North Yorkshire coastline centred around Whitby. At its height in 1873, the jet jewellery industry was a major employer in the region with over 200 miners and 1500 other workers. It became fashionable in the late 1800s when Queen Victoria popularised jet, especially as mourning jewellery. Nowadays black is of course fashionable in its own right! This elegant facetted necklace with drop bead will enhance any number of outfits. It measures approximately 46cms. We have a large collection of Jet jewellery instore.
